On June 18, 1960, Republic Act No. 2650 established Prosperidad as a municipality. The town of Prosperidad is renowned for hosting the Naliyagan Festival, an annual celebration that involves the whole province of Agusan del Sur. Additionally, it holds its own festival called the Angot Festival, celebrated every 28th of September, in honor of St. Michael the Archangel.

With a land area of 505.15 square kilometers or 195.04 square miles, the municipality comprises 5.06% of Agusan del Sur’s total area. Based on the 2020 Census, its population was 88,321, accounting for 11.95% of Agusan del Sur province’s total population, and 3.15% of the Caraga region’s overall population. These figures result in a population density of 175 inhabitants per square kilometer or 453 inhabitants per square mile.
