Bunawan is a town located in Agusan del Sur, a province that is landlocked. According to the 2020 Census, the population of Bunawan was 47,512, accounting for 6.43% of the total population of Agusan del Sur and 1.69% of the population of the Caraga region. The population density is estimated to be 93 individuals per square kilometer or 240 individuals per square mile.
Republic Act No. 2517 established Bunawan as a municipality on June 21, 1959. In September 2011, the world’s largest crocodile, Lolong, was captured in the town.
