The provincial government of Agusan del Sur (PGAS) through the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) conducted the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) orientation for students seeking job this summer at the PGAS multi-purpose building in Patin-ay, Prosperidad.
SPES is a flagship initiative of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) designed to address the financial challenges faced by economically disadvantaged students in the Philippines. Recognizing the importance of supporting the students in their pursuit for education, SPES provides opportunities for meaningful employment during school breaks or summer vacations.
A total of 1,357 junior and senior high school & college students have applied for the SPES program with only 625 to be chosen to be beneficiaries due to the limited slots. DOLE had allotted 200 slots for 20 days work while PGAS will shoulder 425 slots good 10 days work only.
Governor Santi Cane Jr. graced the gathering and shared his personal experiences in overcoming challenges and adversities to complete his education. “Educate yourself if you want to succeed in life,” the governor exhorted.
To resolve the excess number of applicants, drawing of lots was used to choose the 625 students who can avail of the summer job.
An added feature of the orientation was a talk given on mental health, which is a very significant concern in these times. The resource speaker, Myrna Cortez, a social worker highlighted the healthy coping mechanisms and strategies individuals can use to manage stress effectively. She emphasized on the importance of self-care, mindfulness and the seeking of professional help when needed, aiming to create a supportive environment where mental health is openly discussed and prioritized.
