Barangay tanods in AgSur get protective gears from PGAS
By David M. Suyao
The provincial government of Agusan del Sur (PGAS) distributed a total of 1,882 protective gears to barangay tanods provincewide in order that they could render services even in bad weather conditions.
Dubbed as Team Eddiebong, the group of provincial officials led by Gov. Santiago Cane Jr. hopped from one municipality to another for three days in order they can distribute the protective gears to the recipients through their respective municipal mayors.
Every set of the protective gear is composed of a raincoat, reflectorized vest, flashlight, handcuff and whistle.
“Being trusted to perform as barangay police and at the same time responder during calamities, these barangay tanods work unconditionally even in bad weather. It is just fitting that they are provided with the protective gear in order that they can protect themselves from harsh conditions and even to protect themselves from harm if ever they will be attacked by some unscrupulous individuals in the performance of their duties,” Governor Cane said.
Led by the local chief executive, the team was composed of Vice Gov. Samuel Tortor, SP members Avalota Cejas, Joseph Plaza, Gina Ceballos, Edwin Elorde, Cesar Alonde, Allan Lim, Glen Plaza, Edgar Ga and Pablo Plaza.
On the first day, February 8, 2023, the team covered the far-flung municipalities of La Paz, Loreto Veruela, Sta. Josefa and Trento.
On February 9, they were at the municipalities of Sibagat, Esperanza, San Luis Talacogon Prosperidad and the city of Bayugan and on the last round of the team’s route were the municipalities of Bunawan, Rosario and San Francisco.
Agusan del Sur has a total of 5,182 barangay tanods and many have no protective gears. Though the protective gears cost the provincial government some amount of money, Governor Cane said they will find ways and means so that every barangay tanod can be provided with protections.
